Credit union supports appeal for city night shelter

As members of a credit union, we know the value of being part of a community of people who are committed to helping each other save and borrow affordably. But WCCU’s staff member Lisa Summers has noticed over the past year the growing number of homeless people in Wolverhampton who seem cut off from any community help and support. “Sometimes, they will turn to the credit union for help, but since they often don’t have ID - which is a legal requirement to open an account - we’re limited in the ways we can help.” Then she heard about the Wolverhampton campaign to set up an emergency night shelter for homeless people - along with support from volunteers to help them get their life on track. “Having met so many more people in this position, I thought it was really important that the credit union support the campaign for its Christmas appeal.”

This week, the credit union’s chair of board of volunteer directors, Alf Williams, handed a cheque of £250.00 to the night shelter campaign’s representative, Matt Lambert. And other credit union members have been donating cash and their time.

We hope more members will support the campaign to provide 20 beds a night for rough sleepers at the Tabernacle Baptist Church in Broad Street during the cold winter months of 2017.

The partnership between Grace Church Wolverhampton, Tabernacle Baptist Church, Hope into Action, Black Country and Wolverhampton Homeless Outreach also needs local volunteers to staff the shelter from 8.00pm to 7.00am.

Email enquiries about volunteering at the shelter to churchsheltervolunteers@gmail.com.
