Credit union launches shirt to promote ethical lending

A community bank has launched its own shirts in a bid to promote ethical loans in the face of the Wolves’ sponsorship deal with payday lender The Money Shop.

Wolverhampton City Credit Union (WCCU) is calling on Wolves supporters and community groups to counter the ‘significant media platform’ the deal will give the high interest lender.

WCCU manager and Wolves season ticket holder Matt Goulding said the alternative shirt was inspired by fans who were concerned by the effects of payday lending on a city already suffering high levels of over-indebtedness.

“We were contacted by a fan, Adrian Porter, who shared our grave concerns about the sponsorship deal and who wondered if we would consider designing an alternative shirt. He asked fellow supporters to help with a design.

“While we cannot use the Wolves’ logo or branding suggested by some fans, we are carrying Adrian’s slogan - ‘Wolves fans support ethical lending’ - alongside our own brand colours and logo.  

“It’s a very positive message and we hope it will remind people that there are alternatives to high interest short-term loans.

“We have produced a small batch of the shirts for use only in our recruitment campaigns in the community. We’re a credit union, not a clothing manufacturer or retailer, but we hope our shirts might inspire others to think of ways to resist the marketing power of the payday lenders.
